All I did was look at the admin dashboard, which says 2mb.

So, the upload process was successful but it breaks the admin.
Linux or win server?
Php version?

Yes.

Previously, it was Linux. But, looking just now it's Debian. Php is 5.3.

Do you get the same error if you upload the image via FTP connection?

OK, go to Configuration/Setting/Error handling tab and enable it.
Turn off compression on the Compression tab. Retest file upload.
Or if you have access to apache log files, search for errors, notices.

I enabled error handling and turned off compression. Then, I uploaded a file via ftp. Same problem.

Go to Report/Log files.
Select directory error_log.
