I wonder if it would be easier to "update" Alegro by doing a re-fork from the OpenCart 1.5.5.1 Community Edition code plus transfering and adapting all changes since the first Alegro fork, keeping the look, menu, etc...

You'll got a strong shopping cart quasi-compatible with OC themes and extensions.

I know. As im going more and more through Alegro's code, i got strange ideas...
You should consider the time it will take to attract devs writting extensions/templates for Alegro with a source at 0.79 OC level.

Have a look at AbanteCart
It looks like something copied/based from OC (1.4.9.x ?) released under OSL 3.0.
But all is not similar, many modifications so the result is very very nice. Good job.
The demo shop is superb with responsive design.

Tested AbanteCart. It's Opencart 1.4.x base code, heavily modified. If merchants find it a nice looking, latest Opencart 1.5.x is superior in code and has less errors. Often Abantecart is over-complicated where OC stay direct and simple. Languages and extensions use XML, which i dont see the real benefit.
There is always a place between them for Alegrocart, with extensions compatibility and less complicated.

Have tested AbanteCart 1.2.0alpha and really impressed by the level of the product and progress from 1.1.9.
Responsive template, REST api, display options, ... all run out of fresh install and seem good.
If i compare with Opencart 2.0, it's day and night, OC has taken a wrong way of developpement and it will take months before being usable in production.

Have a look at OpenCart Overclocked, an interesting work issued from OC1.5.6.4 (latest of OC1.5 series).
It is supposed stable and better for production.

Arastta a fork of Opencart 2.x but better
Same team as Mijoshop Joomla extension, they didnt appreciate comments on OC forum (read history).
Their software seems have less bugs than OC2.x which goes slowly in a wall.
Full bootstrap responsive design, nice but eats much space on display and shows few products compared to a traditional presentation.
