I think the 'Latest Products' module should behave differently or it should be enhanced. There should be an option whereby you can set the module to display products based on the time they were added. This should be a setting that allows the module to behave on auto mode which is how most other 'latest' scripts work. It would help reduce work load when handling a big site.

Latest Products module behaves auto. Go to admin/extension/catalog latest to set it.
If you add products to Latest products in the menu, that is not auto, as the menu (and its structure) is maintained by you.

I understand now. The 'Latest' in the side menu is just another category.
